Southeastern Five-lined Skink

The Southeastern Five-lined Skink, scientifically known as Plestiodon inexpectatus, is a fascinating reptile found in the warm climates of the southeastern United States, including the area around Summerville, South Carolina. This species is notable for its striking appearance, characterized by five distinct longitudinal stripes running down its sleek body. The colors of the Southeastern Five-lined Skink can vary, but they typically feature a combination of brown or gray scales with vibrant blue tails, especially in younger individuals. As they mature, the blue coloration fades, and the skinks tend to develop a more subdued coloration.

These skinks are often found in a variety of habitats, including forests, gardens, and grasslands, where they prefer areas with plenty of cover such as leaf litter or under logs and rocks. Their agile bodies and keen reflexes make them adept at escaping predators, often darting into crevices or burrowing into the ground to hide. The Southeastern Five-lined Skink is primarily insectivorous, feeding on a diet of insects and other small invertebrates, which they hunt with quick bursts of speed.

In addition to being a captivating species to observe, the Southeastern Five-lined Skink plays an important role in its ecosystem, helping to control insect populations. Their presence is a positive indicator of a healthy environment, and they can often be spotted basking in the sun on warm days, making them a delightful sight for wildlife enthusiasts in the Summerville area.
