The Ruby-throated Hummingbird, scientifically known as Archilochus colubris, is a captivating species commonly seen in Summerville, South Carolina. This small bird is renowned for its vibrant and iridescent plumage, particularly the striking ruby-red throat of the male, which gives the species its name. These hummingbirds are often spotted flitting among flowers, where they feed on nectar using their specialized long bills and extendable tongues. During the warmer months, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can be found across North America, including the lush gardens and parks of Summerville. They are known for their territorial behavior, with males aggressively defending their feeding areas from other hummingbirds. Their rapid wing beats, which can exceed 50 beats per second, create a distinctive humming sound that is characteristic of these birds.

As migratory birds, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds travel long distances between their breeding grounds in North America and wintering habitats in Central America. They typically arrive in South Carolina in the spring, just in time to take advantage of the blooming flowers.
