Eastern Amberwing

The Eastern Amberwing, scientifically known as Perithemis tenera, is a fascinating dragonfly species commonly found in the wetlands and open areas around Summerville, South Carolina. Recognizable by its striking amber-colored wings, this small dragonfly has a slender body that typically measures around 1.5 inches in length. The male Eastern Amberwing displays vibrant orange to amber hues, while females tend to be a bit more subdued in color, showcasing a mix of yellow and brown tones.

Eastern Amberwings are often seen gliding gracefully over ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams, where they hunt for small insects. Their agile flying abilities allow them to capture prey mid-air, making them effective predators in their aquatic habitats. One of the most distinctive features of this species is its unique wing structure, which reflects sunlight beautifully, creating a shimmering effect that can be mesmerizing to observe.

These dragonflies are typically active during the warmer months, with sightings peaking in late spring through early fall. They are known to perch on vegetation near water, where they can easily take off to pursue prey. The Eastern Amberwing plays an important role in the local ecosystem, serving as both predator and prey, and contributing to the biodiversity of the wetlands in the Summerville area.
